When Brave High Concept Scripts Get Made
I was so happy to see the trailer for The Lobster a week ago. The high concept premise was smack bang at the start of the 90 second trailer: "if you fail to fall in love with someone, you'll turn into an animal".
Watching this sent me down a rabbit hole in search for some of the writer/director's earlier works. I came across Dogtooth and Alps and discovered that Yorgos Lanthimos is the lord of high concept.
Dogtooth: Three teenagers live isolated, without leaving their house, because their over-protective parents say they can only leave when their dogtooth falls out.
Alps: A group of people start a business where they impersonate the recently deceased in order to help their clients through the grieving process.
It's a relief to see some adventurous scripts getting made. I hop The Lobster is a huge success and I can't wait to watch Dogtooth and Alps.
